Techno dressing comes from Berlin, where clubs turned colourful rave clothes into something darker and more practical. At festivals such as Awakenings and Dekmantel it means black, simple shapes and hard-wearing fabrics. The rules matter more here than the trends: some festivals ask you to keep your shirt on, store your bag and jacket in a locker, or stay off your phone on the dancefloor.
Where it comes from
- Berlin techno clubs established "a strictly black style, partly borrowed from the dark scene", in contrast to colourful North American rave style. Wikipedia: Rave
- At Tresor, "a trend in paramilitary clothing was established… by DJ Tanith". Wikipedia: Techno
- One retailer's history puts it this way: UK rave dressing from 1988 was practical (wide trousers, cotton tees, sneakers), and Berlin took the code in the early 1990s and made it "black instead of colorful, technical instead of fluffy". Tresor opened in 1991 and Berghain in 2004. FUGA Studios journal (retailer blog)
- Berghain opened in December 2004. Its door policy is "notorious for being both strict and opaque", and it has no published dress code. The bouncers have also faced accusations of racism over who gets in. Wikipedia: Berghain
