Indie sleaze is the messy, party-photo look of the mid-2000s indie scene, and it has been back since 2022. At festivals it sits alongside a looser "shoegaze" look of thrifted band tees, flannel and windbreakers. It suits guitar-heavy line-ups and cold nights in a field.

Where it comes from

  • Indie sleaze came out of New York's early-2000s post-punk revival (The Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Interpol) and peaked around 2006 to 2012. Wikipedia: Indie sleaze
  • Pete Doherty "largely popularised indie sleaze fashion", and Kate Moss, Agyness Deyn and Alexa Chung took it mainstream. The Cobrasnake (Mark Hunter) shot the scene's party photos, and American Apparel was the main place people shopped for it. Wikipedia: Indie sleaze
  • The name came later. Wikipedia traces "Indie über-sleaze" to a 2016 Facebook group poll, shortened to "indie sleaze" by the Instagram account @indiesleaze in 2021; searches "spiked in early 2022". Wikipedia: Indie sleaze
  • Another account credits a 2018 coinage by Dalia Barillaro of the Consumer Aesthetics Research Institute. Sources disagree, so no single originator is certain. Aesthetics Wiki
